A poem about living through the storms of life.
Dreams, like stars,
guide my steps through the night.
Strong is my pace,
steady my sight.
But stars know nothing
of mountain and sea
To follow them blind
is peril indeed.
Storms, like black holes,
take shape in the night.
They swallow the sky;
they ready the fight.
And storms know well
what stars ignore
For mountain and sea
are their allies in war.
Together they plot
in the gathering black.
The storm takes its place
and mounts the attack.
Its eyes flash;
its belly rumbles.
The world as I knew it
shudders and crumbles.
Deftly it tugs
at the ground ‘neath my feet
’Til solid rock
swells like the sea.
I am towered and tossed
by rocking mountains.
The sky falls;
the underworld fountains.
So I run and I climb and I dodge and I leap
as the ground churns and my heart quakes and there is no
stopping and there is no resting ’til the next ledge and the farther peak
as all the world rises and all the world falls on the black
strings of a hole that ever gaping never sleeps.
“Climb! Climb!” the storm thunders.
“Dance! Dance!” calls the sea,
“Come dance your frenzied climb in my never-ending swell!”
A roar in my ears,
a snap at my feet,
they laugh at my scramble
to inevitable defeat.
But there in the distance
a ghost of a form
walks straight toward me
unperturbed by the storm.
I know His face;
I’ve seen it before
He gave me the dream
when we met on the shore.
He’s the Keeper of Zion,
the Prince of all Peace.
Though the sea rage about Him,
it can’t lift His feet.
So I’ll set my heart
to follow His lead
The ruler of waves
and the giver dreams.
Together we’ll dance
on the waves of the sea,
my eyes on Him,
His hand on me.
Beautiful, encouraging work! Thank you for sharing!
Thank you, Michelle!
Wow, this really captures what it feels like in the midst of a storm (the frenzy) and the calmness that enters when we see Him there. Thank you for sharing this beautiful imagery.
I’m so glad you enjoyed it, Tammy!
