Abide

A reflection from a spiritual retreat.

floating

            numb

      through a racing world

                  fumbling

            stumbling

to restful garden

            take a breath

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

            waiting

      waiting

                  for something to break

                        perhaps in me

            perhaps the world

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

lilies yawn

            birds pass

      soft breeze

                  through the grass

unnamed sorrows

            drifting heart

      shattered will

                  scattered parts

offered hand

            soul’s edge

      peer deep

                  from the ledge

                              imagine

      what is lurking there

down in the dredges of my heart

            down where the dragons dwell

hold back

            deep breath

      Trust Me.

                  take a step

plunge in

            held tight

      down through

                  feared sights:

broken wings

            unmet needs

      twisted words

                  failed seeds

deeper

      still:

swallowed lies

            wounded heart

      Babel’s bricks

                  buried thoughts

                              and underneath?

on down

            clench tight

      dread throbs

                  against the night

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

·                    ·                    ·                    ·

But there my eyes

            are opened wide—

      not to darkness,

                  but to light:

a forest deeper than my dreams.

      There You introduce to me

my truest self,

            the one you see—

the me You knitted in the womb,

            the person You have cleansed

      and freed.

No dredges of the heart are these—

            no demons’ lair,

      but Christ in me.

In these depths

            is glory hid;

      no place to fear—

                  a place to live!
