Attitudes of Being

A poetic reflection from the beatitudes.

O my soul—

      you who cry

to your heart,

“Do not want!

      Lest you be disappointed.

Do not love!

      Lest you be hurt.

Do not need!

Lest you be a burden.” —

Do you not know?

The heart is an elephant;

it cannot be tamed

(only trained).

This cage you build

                                                           will end in jailbreak.

Hear the Good Shepherd:

Come thirsty!

Come broken!

Come heavy-laden!

Blessed are those who weep
for they will know the comfort of God.

Blessed are the needy
for it is they who find heaven’s kingdom.

Blessed are the empty
for they will know what it is to be truly filled.
