The Pencil

A memory from 2016 that I’d nearly forgotten. I love how God uses such little things in our lives to remind us of such important ones.

The afternoon retreat was ending.

“Choose an envelope—a gift to take home.”

Each was different.

I prayed about which one to take,

saw it,

took it.

Inside was a picture card with a verse on it.

I don’t remember what.

Also, there was a sparkly rainbow pencil,

the fruit of the Spirit written all over it.

Silly.

What did I want with a

Christian bookstore pencil for kids?

But it was a gift.

I brought it home,

tossed it in my pencil cup,

went to bed.

That night, I dreamed a dream:

I was working at my desk.

A small, crouching figure kept sneaking up on me.

He was a silly little thing,

but tenacious.

I’d push him away,

get back to work,

but his grubby little fingers

would creep back up

the moment I forgot him.

I had to keep a tight guard.

That slippery little devil

was trying to steal my pencil.
