When in Thailand recently, I got to spend some time interacting with elephants in their natural environment. I was struck by how such an enormous animal could tread so silently that I could barely hear it walking up behind me.
Strong to bear the sons of men
or fell the forest trees,
with many tons’ inertial girth
he treads through all this jungled earth
on silent, velvet feet.
