Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of the season of Lent. We begin this season with a short poem on the temptation of Christ.
We,
in fruitful garden,
eat the one
forbidden fruit.
Israel,
hand-fed,
shuns heaven’s bread
and begs for meat.
He,
forty days starved,
is offered bread in the desert
and found true.
